EFMC - Discussion thread

Q1 - Environment impact our productivity

A few scenario can be referred in this kind of relation.. environment of working place does have connection with productivity:
1. Google office - provide any kind of infrastructure to support staff activities, creating harmony environment.. i.e. children nursery, cafe, health centre, lesisure centre etc.
2. Conventry University - 40 staff swap desk for flexible working form home, can accommocate young lecturer with dual demand of students and young family, hot desk concept, not required to come 9-5..
3. Birmingham Convention Cetre - provide lunch menu which can support the effectiveness of the conference users/ delegate.. In Malaysia we have nasi lemak/ coconut rice before meeting.. after that felt sleepy.. and how can this increase our productivity.. another example RBS at Manchester Spinningfields provide fantastic cafetaria .. with health agenda for their staff.. this can increased staff productivity?
4. CABE study - retention and recruitment of staff/ student in university.. strong correlation of the facilities with performance/ feeling..

Some researcher claims with better environment can increase 15% of productivity..

Open for discussion

EFMC Conference -PGR

Discussion thread:
1. How does the environment we work in impact our productivity?
2. Are there any synergies between university policy and strategy for the business of education and FM strategies or processes?
3. As a researcher how well or otherwise do your university facilities support your study activities?
4. How can we as users contribute to the strategic decision making processes?
5. What are the challenges to the researcher in accessing reliable data to support this research and how honest can you be in presenting the result? there are ethical challenges here that need to be dealt with..

Does anyone have other examples were we may face similar ethical challenges?

Value added FM - Thought of the day

FM should be look more to value added rather than cost reduction. Other researcher felt that FM create problem in managing building? FM should allign directly with the strategic management of the organisation. It is not worth getting perfect condition at the operational level when the organisation does;nt required it? Supply VS demand.. FM should be at the client side..
Visit Withington Community Hospital.. learn how building create a problem to the users.. Male/female toilet.. community view...

Research method : Case Study

It is importance to understand Research Philosophy : Interpretativism (what happening in the world, systematic deconstruction, concerned with deep understanding). Research Problem followed by Research Question. Case selection justification. Research Technique - Interview, Document analysis, observation.. multiple source of evidence : data triangulation..

Thought of the day - SPICE FM Processes

Discussion about the adoption of FM processes into HEIs

Example 1 – Application of SPICE FM processes maturity model in NHS facilities. The SPICE FM framework evaluated the FM processes of the facilities directorate identified at the level 2 of the SPICE model (Amaratunga, D., Haigh, R, et.al 2002)
· Review of operational processes within the department, highlighting its key strength and weakness
· A prioritised list of process related improvements based on its contribution to the department strategic objectives
The SPICE models does not specifically deal with formulating and evaluating FM strategies. Focus at operational/ employee level – day to day action which can see not link with FM strategies.
This approach can be seen as it (what is happening) not To be (what should happen) – audit tool.

Case study research methodology is the most suitable research strategy in searching FM processes protocol applicability within HEIs Estate Division. – understanding processes as they occur in their context.

Realising FM Vision

Realising FM Malaysia Vision is the transformation of the FM organisation. It is a process of innovation and radical affecting every area of the organisation. Example of ROV is transforming University of Salford which aim to put the UOS at the leading edge of higher education institutions (HEIs) in the UK. ' Realising our vision is working to transform the way in which we organise and run the University to make it fit for thr first part of the 21st century and the challenges that will face the university over the next 10 or 20 years' Prof Michael Harloe VC UOS.
